Emerging Markets Private Equity Survey
Investors' Views of Private Equity in Emerging Markets

According to the 2010 EMPEA/Coller Capital Emerging Markets Private Equity Survey, institutional investors increasingly see emerging markets as attractive for private equity both on a standalone basis and relative to more developed markets. Over half (57%) of limited partners currently invested in EM PE plan to accelerate their new commitments over the next two years, with EMs’ share of PE commitments growing from 6-10% of total PE commitments today to 11-15% in two years’ time. Investors expect EM PE to outperform developed markets, for both recent and future vintages, driven by the view that growth—not leverage—will power returns. LPs indicate their interests were at least as well aligned with their EM GPs as with their developed market GPs. LPs continue to view China, Brazil and India as the most attractive markets for investment but are also looking for investment opportunities in less penetrated markets.

The 151 respondents to the 2010 Survey represented a range of institutions and geographies, including pensions, foundations, endowments, asset managers and funds-of-funds from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
